I don't need to tell you it's a challenging time economically-speaking. While the realities are very demanding, it was also apparent that the arts benefit those communities the most that recognize its potential for making a difference. By attracting tourism and jobs to the areas, art and cultural centers can be a major influence on the financial health of local communities. Eye-opening sessions ranged from building a fundraising board of directors to supporting arts in rural Texas towns.

I walked away more determined than ever to support our local art centers, especially in Aransas Pass. We have so much creative potential with the Rialto Theater downtown and other galleries coming in to that area. It's key for us to encourage and take advantage of that - not just to bring tourist dollars in but also to draw people to purchase homes and businesses here. I know one couple who chose Aransas Pass over other towns in the area because we have a theater downtown. I bet more families made that choice as well. It gives us an edge even over Rockport, which was one of five towns in Texas recognized at the conference for making the arts community a focal point in their economic growth. We just need to leverage the art along with the saltwater heaven we have here.

So, get out there, folks - support your local artists and local businesses. Stop assuming you have to drive to Corpus Christi for shopping and entertainment. Make an effort this week to take another look right out your back door; you may be surprised at what you find!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Daily through February 26 - "Hearts for the Arts" Exhibit. Beyond improving the quality of life, drawing business to the area, and developing depressed downtowns by enticing artists in, we are often are the catalyst for fundraising and attention to aid good causes. Yesterday, after the final matinee performance and cast party for "Always...Patsy Cline" at the Rialto Theater, we joined a benefit for an ailing musician in Port Aransas (artists often don't have health insurance) at the Tarpon Ice House. Many of the silent auction items were donated by fellow musicians and visual artists in our area. Musicians came from all over to play the day-long event to help raise money for Dave's medical bills. And they didn't let a little pouring rain put a damper on the parade.

A great fundraiser is coming up next month! Mark your calendars for the 9th Annual Bountiful Bowl Clay Expo at the Rockport-Fulton High School Commons the first weekend in February. This great exhibition features fine artisans from around the country and benefits the Aransas County Council on Aging Meals On Wheels Program. There are, of course, artists booths with wares to sell but also regular demonstrations of hand-building and wheel work from talented potters.

Also next month, the Rialto's production of "The Vagina Monologues" joins playwright Eve Ensler's worldwide movement with a play that continues to bring focus to the fight against domestic violence. Through humor & drama, this play is a perfect example of a grassroots effort that has sparked ongoing debate and attention to a problem everyone has been touched by in one way or another. Keep in mind art not only beautifies but can also electrify a community. Play a part in their efforts to make the world a better place one painting, one song, one play at a time!
Upcoming Artisan Events:

Thursdays-Saturdays through January 29, 7:30 p.m. - "Opal's Baby" on stage. And, of course, loving all the artistic expressions to be found here. I love visiting new places and observing how regional differences influence the work of local artists. The waterfront and the Native American presence is obvious here in the beautiful works we see everywhere. Larger metropolitan areas also tend to provide support (financial and otherwise) with artistic avenues in the public spaces and that's always inspiring.

It seems everywhere we look, there's sculpture sitting alongside a park walkway, or a highway or a street corner. Many buildings and walls have colorful murals or mosaics displayed. We even saw a very colorful installation using chewing gum for its media as we were walking along Post Alley in the Pike Market area. And, yes, the public is welcome to and happily adds to the work. Art? In this case, believe it or not, yes. But don't try that at home, folks!

Closer to home, we've got some great live stage events to see (but leave the chewing gum at home...). It's the final weekend for "Rush Limbaugh at Night School," at the Rialto, the "Yee Haw" variety show is on at PACT, "Aida" continues at Harbor, and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" explodes at the Aurora. The rain will stop, the sun will shine and art will continue to inspire. The tellers and listeners work together, and when we share a story, it removes barriers of strangeness." I have yet to make it to the annual George West's Storyfest every November, usually because it conflicts with the Rialto Theater's "Black Tie & Blue Jeans" Gala, but I can certainly relate to Mr. Hayes' point of view.

Every artist, whether visual or performing, attempts to impart a story in that moment to their audience. Some via a two-hour play, others through a painting, a three minute song or through touch of a sculpture. In today's culture of soundbites, the internet, and instant gratification, artists are challenged to capture the patron's interest and attention with their work. Some painters spend their life telling a story through a series of paintings while others paint a picture with only one. A triptych is a series of three panels comprising one body of work. You'll often see them in the regional art exhibits here in the Coastal Bend.

Regardless of how the artist chooses to share in their media of choice, think about art as simply a way of telling a story to you. It's nothing more or less than that; a way of reaching out to you, removing the barriers of strangeness that separates and alienates us as individuals. Art can provide a common bond and enable you to see someone else's point of view in a whole new way.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Friday, August 6, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - "First Friday" Opening Reception. The themes of both the Best Play and Best Musical award winners this year revolved around true stories (or as "true" as any staged or Hollywood presentation is) from other areas of the creative arts. "Red" portrays American expressionist Mark Rothko and his struggle to create a masterpiece while coping with competition from his protege'. Best Musical "Memphis" is loosely based on the work of 1950's disk jocky "Daddy-O" Dewey Phillips who stretched the boundaries of the day and broadcast music based on what he liked, ignoring racial boundaries. Daddy-O was also the first to play Elvis' "That's All Right/Blue Moon of Kentucky" debut on the air.

Another Best Musical nominee, "Fela" tells the story of Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. "American Idiot" is a post-911 tale set to the music of the popular band "Green Day." "Sondheim on Sondheim" is a portrait of the famous Tony-award winning composer/lyricist. It seemed this year, art itself was the inspiration for many fine plays who all deserved to win, of course. I also found it interesting that many of those nominated had strong ties to television and movie roles. For example, the entire category of "Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play" was comprised of movie actors like Jude Law, Denzel Washington and Liev Schreiber.

Now, most of us can't hop a plane to Broadway and we're not likely to see movie stars on our local stages. Nevertheless, we have fine talent in the region performing at community theaters around the area. You'll be surprised at what you'll find if you go get a little taste of Broadway (or off-off-Broadway) at theaters right in your backyard. Give them a try; they'll never win a Tony but they'll entertain you with no problem at all.

Upcoming Artisan Events:Saturday, June 19, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - "Shirley Blackman Poster Artist" Reception and Opening Exhibit. I mean, why should people care whether we have an arts presence at all? Who needs all that artsy fartsy stuff, anyway? There are, after all, certainly more demanding issues to tackle like domestic violence, world hunger, peace, oil spills, etc. - not necessarily in that order, of course.

So, I tried to imagine a world that certainly functioned but had no art. Our cars and boats would all look the same. One house would look just like another. There would be no music on the radio; only talk, talk and more talk. TV? The same - talking only: no stories to portray and no theme music. No movie theaters to serve as a brief escape so you can rest your brain for awhile. Your walls at home and at your workplace would be bare. No painted pictures, no sculpture, and no colors to soothe or stimulate. Your trips to the grocery store would have shelf after shelf of white boxes and cans with black lettering describing the contents. No pictures to represent what's inside. Function all around but without the textures, colors, and inspiration that art provides.

I don't know about you but that's not really appealing to me at all. Our local arts centers afford a proving ground for artists be they musicians, actors or visual composer that touch your world in ways you may not have considered before. It's about giving us the inspiration, hope and beauty that in turn provides the space to consider solutions to the major issues we've got to solve. Support your arts centers throughout this region - with your time, money and patronage. They make a major contribution to our communities.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Friday, June 4, 5:30 - 7:30 - "First Friday" Opening Reception. We didn't spend all of it on the interstate; taking the road less traveled from time to time. I saw some great inspiration for downtown areas where someone had obviously made it a priority to focus on and renovate their historic spaces. I took some footage of "The Rex" theater in Pensacola and pictures of some east Texas downtowns in the Longview area that had participated in Main Street programs. They were very interesting comparisons to the "la-la land" of Universal Studios in Florida which depicted landmarks of "downtowns" from around the country with faux storefronts interspersed with rides and exhibits.

Where do the lines get drawn when art and entertainment meet downtown design and development requirements? What role do the arts play in drawing folks into a region or a downtown area? Obviously, cultural potential is great as a tourist draw but also contributes to quality of life for the inhabitants in our area. Like most of you, artists struggle to maintain the balance between budget and needs (or, to be honest, "wants" since creating art is a bit below air, water and food on our survival scale).

I see the potential of where we could go and what we could show at our own little bend in the road. It's just a matter of fortitude and patience to continue to strive for it. In the meantime, artists will keep throwing their pots, painting their pictures, singing their songs, and acting their hearts out on the stage for you. Spend some time this week showing your appreciation for the difference they make for our communities here!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Thursday, May 20, 7:00 p.m. - "The Three Little Pigs" Houston Children's Theatre production. They have over 200 member-artists. One of their great annual fundraisers is coming up. "Fiesta de Mayo" kicks off this long, active weekend starting off with dinner and an auction on Thursday evening at the Port Aransas Community Center. Then, go and enjoy the artists participating in the Art Festival on Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the historic Tarpon Inn.

This showcases some wonderful, unique artists around the state but, more importantly, you'll meet some local artists who normally don't exhibit at art shows. So, you'll see a range of work not normally seen outside of galleries or their private studios. Last year's show was quite diverse in its offering even though the courtyard at Tarpon Inn is a rather small show space.

Monday night brings the events of the weekend to a close. My favorite event, the Songwriter's Showcase, has been going strong for the last twenty-seven years and is a great way to enjoy wonderful music while supporting the Art Center's cause of bringing art to the public. This year, for the first time ever, it's taking place at Cinnamon Shore, a relatively new seaside development on HIghway 361 outside of Port Aransas. Come join me for some great music with a backdrop of waves hitting the shore. Should be an awesome weekend of art and music!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Saturday, May 15, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - "Deborah Males and J.P. This will be a place where he can finally have room to work his magic with wood; building furniture and boats and I can get back to doing stained glass again. At least, that's what we're telling ourselves.

Like most folks who aren't independently wealthy, we struggle to make time to pursue the things that stoke our personal creative fires. We've been pretty successful at finding time to sing and perform; it's the rehearsals that are the challenge. Many artistic people figure out that they really can't pursue all the avenues they would like to try. I struggled for quite awhile trying to decide how to limit and focus on what to pursue. And, honestly, I still do fight the overwhelming urge to take more classes in untried arenas: "Oh! Fused Glass 101 - cool! Hey, here's a session on Creative Writing. This year, the Texas Watercolor Society is holding their national annual exhibition at the Rockport Art Center. Texas watercolorists, along with those from thirty-three other states, will be competing for honor and prizes. The opening reception and awards are going to be presented on April 10 and works will continue on display through May 8. And, of course, it's a wonderful way to enjoy art with no expense (unless you see something you just cannot live without). Please plan on attending; you'll marvel at the bolder colors - these aren't the washed out watercolors we all played with in elementary school.

And I hope they still do play with watercolors in elementary school. With funding cuts, school art and music programs are often the first to go. Though I have no talent for it, I remember sitting at the table, with a little cup of water, a brush in hand and splashing water on the paper. Once I gave up trying to stay within the lines and just went with the flow, I had fun and enjoyed the experience.

All of us could do with a bit of that attitude these days. Why do we try to stay within the lines so much, anyway? A sense of security? Doing what's expected? Who sets those guidelines, anyway? I think too often we try to force ourselves into a narrower focus than is necessary. Worse, we try to impose a rigid set of "rules" on others when, at the heart of it, our differences are what make the world so interesting. This week, try blurring your lines a bit and see where the journey takes you.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Thursdays - Saturdays through April 17, 7:30 p.m. - "Cheatin'" On Stage, Port Aransas Community Theater. There are two area art exhibits that focus completely on their members' works and/or the work of adult students who enrolled in classes within the last year. The Rockport Art Center has their annual "Currents" member show on display. We had friends visiting from Longview so we dropped in to visit the show. She is an artist at heart but, like many of us, has schedule issues - because, after all, how do you fit everything in, really? The support and encouragement the staff there showed us as we toured the exhibit was phenomenal. I think we all walked out feeling like anything is possible and we all have potential to express ourselves artistically if we just make the time.

The Art Center for the Islands in Port Aransas recently had their "First Friday" opening with their adult student art show. Another non-profit art organization accessible to all, they offer classes year-round in a variety of media. No experience is necessary although many artists will take a break from their primary media and take a class in something completely different to re-ignite their creative fires and feed the passion.

If you need further inspiration to start something new but feel it's "too late to try," consider "Grandma" Moses who didn't begin painting until she was in her 70's. Julia Child was just shy of fifty when she collaborated on her infamous French cookbook. Raymond Chandler introduced the world to Philip Marlowe when he published "The Big Sleep," his first novel, at fifty-one. So, if you're young and wondering what you're going to do "when you grow up," relax a bit. If you're older, just do it - what have you got to lose? Pick up the paintbrush, prepare your canvas and take the first stroke.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Tuesday, January 19, 7:00 p.m. - "Rialto Rhythms" Weekly Open Acoustic Jam. There's so much to do and a whole 'nother year to do it in! I want to take this week's column to remind you of some of the great non-profit art centers we have right here in our region who need your regular attendance and support this year to keep their doors open in very challenging economic times!

Starting in downtown Aransas Pass, the Rialto Theater is home to art, music and live theater events. We are extremely lucky to have not only its art offerings but also recognize the value in keeping an old 1937 movie theater alive when so many have fallen by the wayside. The acoustics in there are amazing! Just down the road in Ingleside, check out the Golden Triangle Art Association; they have some great exhibits and classes you may find enjoyable this year for both adults and children.

Back up the road in Rockport, the Rockport Art Center hosts regular classes and art exhibits with world class distinction. Their annual July 4th Art Festival is an amazing undertaking. And every spring and fall, don't forget to attend The Rockport Little Theatre's events. RLT's productions specialize in farce and are always great fun in the old Rockport Elementary School building. They just finished renovation there, so I can't wait to see the next play and check out the improved space!

Now cross the ferry to Port Aransas. You'll find The Art Center for the Islands, a long-time member-driven center with monthly "First Friday" art receptions and art classes. They have been raising money to build and finally own their own facility and have a three year plan to make it reality. Their annual fundraiser, The Songwriter's Showcase and Art Festival on the Tarpon Inn's grounds is always enjoyable. Just outside of town on Hwy 361, you'll find the Port Aransas Community Theater. Not too long ago, they built a new facility and offer regular live stage productions throughout the year.

Space doesn't permit me to cover Victoria or Corpus Christi; but there are plenty of other non-profit art centers in our neck of the woods that need your help this year. Attend a concert, go to a jam, buy a ticket to a play, put a dollar in their donation jars. VOLUNTEER. These folks all need your help to keep going, keep focused, and keep the arts alive!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Thursday, January 7, 7:30 p.m. - Preview of "Clarence Darrow for the Defense." Rialto Theater. Admission: Free to Marquee Members, others $12

Friday, January 8, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. - "First Friday" Opening Reception, Adult Student Show. Art Center for the Islands. Admission: Free.

Friday & Saturday, January 8-9, 7:30 p.m. - "Clarence Darrow for the Defense." Rialto Theater. Admission: $12.

Friday & Saturday, January 8-9, 8:00 p.m. - "Greater Tuna." Port Aransas Community Theater. Admission: $16.

Tuesday, January 12, 7:00 p.m. - "Rialto Rhythms" Weekly Open Acoustic Jam. Rialto Theater. Admission: Free ($5 contribution suggested).

Sunday, January 24, 2:00 p.m. - Final Matinee performance of "Clarence Darrow for the Defense." Rialto Theater. Admission: $12.

Sunday, January 24, 7:30 p.m. - "Shane" classic western with the Cinema Flashbacks Club. Rialto Theater. And, though I've stopped beating myself up by making unreasonable new year resolutions, I do enjoy looking back at where I've been and getting "back on track" in the months to come.

I've never heard of anyone saying from their deathbed, "I wish I'd spent more time at work." In the year ahead, remember in your rush to make ends meet that it's important to make time to do those things that bring joy into your soul. Spend some time letting your creative juices flow. How about flinging caution to the wind and trying something completely new that you haven't had the guts to tackle yet? Pick up a paint brush. Try out for a part in your local community theater. Let that piece of wood show you how to carve. Sing more songs - in your voice, not someone else's. Try saying, "I can't!" a lot less often and get out of your own way.

So, here's to what the future year brings for you with a quote from T.S. Eliot. "For last year's words belong to last year's language, And next year's words await another voice, And to make an end is to make a beginning."

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Daily through December 30 - "Student Art Show" Exhibit. There are many weavers, who work into the pattern the experience of their lives. When one generation goes, another comes to take up the weft where it has been dropped. The pattern changes as the mind changes, yet never begins quite anew. At first, we are not sure that we discern the pattern, but at last we see that, unknown to the weavers themselves, something has taken shape before our eyes, and that they have made something very beautiful, something which compels our understanding."

This season brings a lot of different things to a host of divergent cultures. As I watched the news on Friday night documenting gridlock on Corpus Christi highways leading to the area's malls and shopping centers, watched cars circling parking lots looking in vain for a parking space, and read repeated angry emails about "reclaiming Christmas," it's a bit difficult to remember that at the heart of the season, we are all more similar than we are separate. This is supposed to be a time of giving and celebration, not materialism or pettiness.

Whatever your beliefs, this is a time of rebirth and second chances. The winter solstice marks the seasonal and spiritual turning points when the light returns to lengthen our days again, when we reflect on the year just passed and we wonder (and hope) about the year to come. Whatever label you choose to put on it, whatever weft you wish to weave; if it's done with love, you can't go wrong. We all have the potential to be artists everyday; weaving color into our loved ones' lives, adding texture to the canvas of our days, and making a positive contribution to the beauty around us. Best wishes for the season, everyone!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Tuesday, December 29, 7:00 p.m. - "Rialto Rhythms" Weekly Open Acoustic Jam. Several musicians (with varying degrees of stage fright) have made their public debut at our acoustic jam and are now regulars on stage with us every Tuesday. A few visual artists who had never exhibited their work have allowed us to encourage them by hanging their pieces in the gallery to great success. It's very satisfying to sell a first-time artist's work and see their mixed reaction at letting a "baby" go.

As the year comes to a close (I can't believe how fast it's gone!), I enjoy looking back at the folks we've supported on their creative journey. The landscape is constantly changing; some stay, some go, some we watch take a dogleg and introduce completely new sounds and unexpected styles. It's a joy to watch, even though it sometimes means saying goodbye to an artist as they move on to other stages and other galleries.

This Friday, the Rialto is celebrating another first with a book-signing by local author Jeanie Edwardson. I met Jeanie quite some time ago as she was just getting started in the publication process. After a few delays and challenges along the way, her children's book has finally been released! "Froggy Fun" profiles Freddy of Fernleaf Forest who sings and plays the autoharp. His friend, Franny, encourages him not to hide his talents (just like the Rialto does!). Please join us at the reception on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Let's show support for our local artists in a big way and celebrate Jeanie's tenacity in getting this book published!

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Daily through January 6 - "Bright Energy," The works of Narice Hopp. Rialto Theater Main Gallery. And, I hope you made some time to explore and enjoy the beautiful arts community we have in our area. We joined a group of "orphans;" an eclectic group of folks without family in the region who got together for a potluck (and delicious) meal. The hostess is quite the visual artist with paintings and sculpture displayed throughout. Rumor has it that the host plays a mean sax. Their home was filled with lovely pieces that reflected their diverse tastes and the music on the stereo set the stage with sounds from around the world.

It was a joyful evening catching up with old friends while getting to know some new ones. Many give back to the community through a variety of ways; volunteers and professionals working for the Lupus Foundation, The Fulton Mansion, and the Rialto Theater; active in historical renovations for needy houses; and, of course, through their patronage of places like The Rockport Art Center.

As I've gotten older, I've grown more and more disgusted with the commercialization of Christmas and the holidays. So, I'm going to encourage you (the economy aside) to please think about the true meaning of the season and rededicate yourself to give more of your time and money to deserving non-profit organizations in our region. There's such a need across the board that everyone can find a cause that touches their heart. Whether it's art-related or not, please think about giving more than money this year. Volunteers always seem to be in short supply - organizations need your presence. Think about that instead of vying for a parking place at the mall to spend money on more stuff nobody really needs.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Friday-Saturday, December 4-5, 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, December 6, 2:00 p.m. - "Misery" by Simon Moore, Adapted from Stephen King's novel. We have such talented artists available for viewing in our area; I'm continually amazed at the variety of styles and the innovative work I see. Certainly, we have many talented "birds & beaches" artists on display but there are just as many contemporary, avante garde artists available if you take the time to look. And kudos to those non-profit art centers and boutique galleries that support them!

If we open ourselves to it, the artistic endeavors; whether a painting, music, or play, can transcend time, politics, language, and religious differences. We can find solace and peace for awhile in losing ourselves in a melody, a stage play or in an art exhibit. Maya Angelou said, "Not everything you do is going to be a masterpiece, but you get out there and you try and sometimes it really happens. The other times you're just stretching your soul." Beyond the artist's potential to make something happen, I think every artist's work, regardless of style, has the potential to touch another; to ease their mind, to stretch their boundaries, to expand the light.

Our little area of the Gulf Coast has a great variety of artistic talent to explore. There are non-profit art organizations in practically every community here - go out, explore, expand your soul and show your support for our region's creative talents.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Friday-Saturday, November 27-28, 7:30 p.m. - "Misery" by Simon Moore, Adapted from Stephen King's novel. Admission: $12.

Tuesday, December 1, 7:00 p.m. - "Rialto Rhythms" Weekly Open Acoustic Jam. Rialto Theater. Members were admitted free, volunteers who went above and beyond in the last year were recognized, some area restaurants donated samples from their menus for the reception table and Claude Bourbon put on one heck of a show! And, as always, everyone had fun with the dress code and did ourselves proud with an eclectic range of attire from top hats and evening gowns to t-shirts and denim.

Kudos to the Gumbo Factory and El Maguey's in Aransas Pass; Fai Foo's Cafe and Shempy's Grill in Rockport; and Blackbeard's Too in Ingleside for their delicious offerings to patrons of the annual anniversary celebration. Thanks to the artists who share their work and exhibit on the walls. Thanks to Stuart Michael Burns who has the fun job of coordinating the music concerts all year long around all the other events that take place. Thanks to Jim Elder who not only runs the monthly board meetings, but also builds sets, directs plays, and recruits other directors to join in the fun. Karen Froeschner and Cassie Dietrich deserve recognition for their work in keeping the Rialto in the public eye with press releases, advertising, and other marketing magic. Kay Wise-Denty plays a major role in the Rialto's renaissance; on stage and behind the scenes, she helps us remember that what we're doing is important while striving for improvement. Back in 1937, the Rialto opened its doors to provide the latest and greatest in movie entertainment to this area. If you haven't been back to the Rialto since the doors re-opened five years ago (and you're missing out on quite a bit, if you haven't!), now is the time to walk in the door. The non-profit organization operating the building has expanded beyond the original movie mission to offer live theatrical productions, acoustic music concerts, and eclectic art exhibits. Every Tuesday evening, a free acoustic jam takes the stage with music from the heart; no paid performers, no admission fee, just pure, unadulterated music of all styles. The Cinema Flashbacks Club has brought movies back again to the Rialto this year: $5.00 gets you admission to six months of outstanding classic movies that stand the test of time.

The Rialto's annual "Black Tie & Blue Jeans" Gala this Saturday will celebrate the past, focus on the future and is one way the theater thanks its members and volunteers for their ongoing support. All Marquee Members get free admission to the gala and the Volunteer of the Year is announced at the gala, as well. It's also a major fundraiser to help keep the doors open. Ticket sales help but don't cover all the bills. The performance rights for the plays don't come cheap ($65-75 per night), the annual ASCAP/BMI licensing is costly, seventy to eighty percent of all concert sales go directly to the performers, and the electric bill averages over $600 per month.

In large part to a Hotel and Motel Tax Fund grant from the City of Aransas Pass this year, the Rialto Theater was able to expand their advertising so they've been happy to see many, many folks from outside of town come in to enjoy this historic venue and live productions. However, the reality is without the support of the local community as well; be it your dollars, your attendance, or your volunteer support, it will be impossible to keep the arts alive in the downtown area in the years to come. The Rialto needs you to be there - to celebrate with them, to volunteer with them, and to continue to provide an engaging social center for the community in the years to come.

If you made popcorn in the concession stand, if you sold tickets in years past, if you took a date to the movies, if you ran films in the projection booth, if you wrote JJ + JR on the bathroom stalls, if the Rialto played any role at all in your past, please join in keeping these historic doors open for all in the future. Art adds so much vibrancy to the town and in our region. Join the Rialto Theater on Saturday to celebrate their anniversary and to celebrate the fact that Aransas Pass continues to play a significant part in the growth of our area during challenging times.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

Friday, November 6, 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. - "The Music in Me - First Friday" Opening Reception. That song by the Beatles has been running through my head since last night. I'm sure it will go back to the ether when I've gotten through the latest angst in dealing with artistic temperaments, schedule miscommunications, and the challenges of paying the bills while trying to juggle the volunteer work that feeds the soul. You know the story - never enough time or money to do the things you want when you're engaged in multiple projects; all of which are important to you and to the community. Thanks to all of those folks who come to the rescue and go the extra mile to make a difference in our area!!

I've been blessed to come into contact with creative and dynamic people around much of the globe and those that live here in the Coastal Bend are no exception. Go to an artist's house and you'll not only be surrounded by their work but also the work from other artists they admire filling their space (artists are excellent barterers!) . And when I say "filling the space," I don't mean just physically. The emotional aspect of art is as much a part of the work as anything else and varies based on the individual viewing it. Your reaction to an artist's piece is what makes or breaks the connection at that moment.

And the moments change based on what's happening to you in that time period. What turns you off one day may elicit a more positive, meaningful experience next month if you have the chance to view the same work again. Speaking of repeat viewings, it's time again to visit the artists in Port Aransas during their annual "Artabout" this weekend. This is a trail of open studios and open galleries that offers the public behind-the-scenes glimpses of the artists at work. In addition, many of them will be giving live demonstrations of their technique in their home studios. Jake and I will donating a performance during the event at the Port A Gallery in Pelican's Landing. Hope to see you there!
Upcoming Artisan Events:

Saturday, October 17, 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. - "Port A Art About" Open Studio & Gallery Walk, Port Aransas. So said Margaret Wheatley, co-founder of The Berkana Institute, a global charitable organization with the motto "Whatever the problem, community is the answer." I've noticed a lot of folks who fear change, uncertainty and doubt but the reality is most progress doesn't occur without it.

Aransas Pass has certainly seen its share of fluctuations, disturbances and imbalances, especially in the political realm. I mean, admit it, you have to wonder occasionally - are we ever going to have a city manager again who gets to stay longer than a few months? Regardless, though, we are making progress in many creative and wondrous ways. As I was driving to Conn Brown Harbor and the Annual Boating Conference event on Thursday, I celebrated how wonderful that area is looking now. Most of the debris is gone and neglected boats have disappeared. We have a Farmer's Market twice a month at the Chamber. We have our own year-round visual and performing arts venue at the historic Rialto Theater downtown. As a realtor, I see a lot of homes renovated and fixed-up around town. Our Civic Center is a great step forward. Yes, we have more to do but I know that with fortitude, our community continues to tackle problem areas, improve and grow.

This column primarily centers around art and creativity and, while it obviously focuses most on the artistic realm, I try to consistently get across the fact that creativity is not an 'artists only' characteristic. I believe everyone has a bit of the artist within. You may not consider yourself one, but that does not mean you cannot be open and creative every day. So, open your mind, open your heart and do something today that gives back to our community - whether you consider it "artistic" or not.

Upcoming Artisan Events:

- Friday, October 9, 7:30 p.m. - "Geezerpalooza" Concert by Steven Fromholz and Vince Bell. Mr. Pollock is an American Abstract Expressionist (how's that for a category?) artist who produced huge and chaotic pieces. Personally, his work doesn't "do it" for me but I agree with the general attitude that art is expressed through a variety of media, some not so traditional. It's a part of all of us, whether we think of ourselves in that way or not.

I've done a lot of remodeling and renovation work on old and not-so-old buildings. It's something I enjoy very much for a variety of reasons. There's a lot of creativity involved, a sense of leaving something better than I found it, and a chance to pass a home on to others who will live within it and enjoy it. It's put me into contact with a lot of contractors, very few of whom think of themselves as artists. But the ones who are very good at what they do are, indeed, artists. You see it in the exacting way they form joints, in how well they they sand wood for a finish, or how they share their thoughts during the process to improve on the original idea or design.

I believe the artistic and creative talents are all around us, beyond what most may think of as "traditional art" or "fine art." It doesn't get much better than that! Nothing like some audience participation to add to the laughter on stage. Reminds me of the stories I've heard about traveling shows in the "Old West" complete with six-shooters going off. You'll have to leave the guns at home, load up on some popcorn in the concession area and go have some old-fashioned fun at the theater. It's on for two more weekends.

And speaking of drama, auditions for "Steel Magnolias" continue at the Rialto tonight. Our little corner of the Coastal Bend is full of characters and the play is known for its portrayal of strong southern women. Add Texas to that southern mix and you've got real potential!! I'm not the director, but I run into women every time I turn around who could easily play Clairee, Ouiser and Truvy without even trying. So, come on - you know you've always wanted to act out on stage and "Steel Magnolias" is a great one to stretch into! Channel some inner Shirley MacLaine and go for it! It'll be the theater's season opener in September and sure to be a great kick-off for another successful year of plays, music, and art in our community.

The more I travel, the more I realize how much it takes the support of a community to keep the arts alive within it, especially in tough economic times! If you're not comfortable acting (yet) or singing in the weekly jam, consider volunteering in the gallery, in the concession "stand" or just come in to help scrub the toilets. There's a variety of roles art centers need in our area; work behind the scenes is just as important as on stage.

- Wednesday, July 22, 7:00 p.m - Auditions, "Steel Magnolias."
